How not to become a gold medalist: Brewdog’s ‘performance enhancing’ beer

BrewDog Never Mind The Anabolics

Never ones to shy away from controversy, the ‘punk’ beermakers at Brewdog have released a special Olympic-themed pale ale, with typically shit-stirring results. The 6.5 per cent brew – Never Mind the Anabolics – is apparently infused with creatine, guarana, ginseng, ginkgo, maca powder, matcha tea and kola nut, all with mildly ‘performance-enhancing’ properties, and is of course designed to get up the noses of the IOC. The glimpses of the copyrighted Olympic rings on the label won’t win them any friends in Stratford either. The beer itself is of the the standard we’ve come to expect of the Fraserburgh-based brewery – powerfully hopped, fully flavoured, well balanced – although doesn’t give any hints of its supposed additions. A doping scandal in the making? I’m sure Brewdog would love nothing better… Euan Furguson
