We love Notting Hill Carnival, but good luck trying to hear anything new as you meander through the streets around the Westway. While vintage reggae, roots and dub dominate the soundsystems, the last four years have seen a renegade party set up in the heart of Carnival bursting with the world’s freshest global sounds.
Hosted by dance music magpie Diplo and his Major Lazer crew (now flying solo after co-founder Switch recently flew the nest), their spot on the corner of Portobello Road and Acklam Road is a hub for future-thinking DJs and producers as well as huge name performers. Everyone from M.I.A and Lee Scratch Perry to DJs like Jackmaster and Drop The Lime have rocked one off in the past four years, while this year looks even bigger as dancehall mega star Sean Paul joins UK bass champs like Lil Silva, Mele and Time Out favourite Hudson Mohawke on Carnival Monday. While tickets are free, they disappear in the blink of a browser on a first come/first served basis so get ready to visit the Red Bull website at 10am tomorrow and hopefully you’ll snag a golden ticket.
