Pussy Riot flashmob

The Royal Court throws in its support, verbatim theatre style, for Moscow’s feminist punk band Pussy Riot, held in custody for five months after being arrested for an anti-Putin protest. Before the court’s verdict is delivered at 12 noon on August 17, actors will give a rehearsed reading of the testimonies of Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alekhina and Yekaterina Samutsevich in the café bar, with contributions from Labour MP Kerry McCarthy, who was present at the trial. ‘Hero’ playwright E V Crowe, who conceived the event, will introduce. This is verbatim theatre on the hoof, inspired by an ongoing cultural and political moment that’s had YouTube gripped.
