The Scala Beyond film festival, taking place at venues across the capital until September 29, aims to recapture the spirit of London’s much-missed fleapit cinema with a season of exploitation classics, experimental oddities and wild all-night events. We asked a handful of the festival’s key programmers to pick the screening they’re most excited about. This is the second in an ongoing series of blogs keeping you up to date with the best events across the festival.
Philip Wood of indie film venue Roxy Bar & Screen recommends:
‘Dark Star – Rescored’ at Roxy Bar & Screen on August 26.
What is it?
John Carpenter’s stoner sci-fi classic remains one of the most successful low budget movies of all time. Animat are London’s premier re-soundtrackers, blending original music, found sounds and remixes of the film’s original score.
Why will it be great?
Wood: ‘Animat have done some of the best rescores I’ve ever seen (and heard). Not only are they great musicians, but they treat the films with respect, carefully mixing their original music and other samples with the film’s dialogue and sound. The fantastic “Dark Star”, for which John Carpenter composed the electronic music himself, promises to be another unmissable live cinema experience.’
