If you’re heading to the Notting Hill Carnival this weekend, keep your eyes peeled for this year’s outdoor portrait exhibition of the unsung Carnival heroes. British music photographer and west London resident Pennie Smith has taken eight striking black and white portraits capturing the people who ‘make’ the Carnival. The 2 meter high photos were taken in July during preparations for the 47th Carnival and will be on display right in the heart of festivities, against the infamous DIY wooden chipboards on the corner of Portobello Road and Lancaster Road. Pennie is best known for the album cover of The Clash’s ‘London Calling’ and has photographed some of the world’s greatest musicians in her time. Oliver Kay
