Zadie Smith’s fourth novel, NW, arrives on bookshelves tomorrow, and we’ve got 10 signed copies to give away. Have a gander at our excerpted review below, and then solve a simple little brainteaser to try and snag yourself a copy.
The centre of your universe is where you’re from. For Zadie Smith, it’s north-west London and, more specifically, Kilburn. ‘The centre was not Oxford Circus but the bright lights of Kilburn High Road,’ notes Felix Cooper, the central character of the book’s second half. ‘”Wimbledon” was the countryside, “Pimlico” pure science fiction. It was nowhere. Who lived there? Who even passed through it?’
Each of NW’s four protagonists grew up in the same housing estate, but ended up in different walks of life. Each character has their grubby secrets, and there’s something about the way Smith moulds their personalities – from the way that they walk to the slang they appropriate – that entices you to stay in their heads and savour the build-up to that final climax. ★★★★☆
The competition is now closed. But don’t worry – there’s other great prizes to win right here!
