The Scala Beyond film festival, taking place at venues across the capital until Sept 29, aims to recapture the spirit of London’s much-missed fleapit cinema with a season of exploitation classics, experimental oddities and wild all-night events. We asked a handful of the festival’s key programmers to pick the screening they’re most excited about. This is the last in an ongoing series of blog posts keeping you up to date with the best events across the festival.
Virginie Sélavy of indie film magazine Electric Sheep
‘EuroTrash All-Nighter’ at the Roxy Bar and Screen on Sept 22
What is it?
An entire night of European sleaze with overflowing bodices, funky moogs and lava-lamp lighting galore. Films include ‘Vampyros Lesbos’, ‘So Young’, So Lovely, So Vicious’ and ‘Tower of Evil’ – and you even get breakfast at the end.
Why will it be great? Sélavy:
‘An all-night multi-sensory explosion of lurid colours, delirious fantasies and psychedelic soundtracks: I can’t think of a better way to legally fry your brain on a Saturday night. Dreamy, stylish, sexy and set to the most hypnotic grooves, “Vampyros Lesbos” is the daddy of all Eurotrash delights, starring a mesmerising Soledad Miranda as a Sapphic blood-sucker. There’s more blood-drinking, cruel eroticism and poetic horror in “Fascination”, and I’m looking forward to feeling my jaw drop watching the French Nazi-mummy-zombie lunacy “Devil Story”.’
