Oh no, not another food festival? Well, actually, this one isn’t – not really. If you’ve ever wondered what the London Restaurant Festival actually is, or why you can’t find it, it’s two weeks where the participating restaurants sell ‘festival menus’ alongside a handful of ticketed events, including the ‘gourmet odyssey’ tours (dinner safaris, where you can travel by Routemaster bus for three courses in three restaurants). Sadly, this rather corporate affair is dominated by high-profile restaurants (the kind that keep PR companies on a retainer), rather than celebrating fresh talent or small, independent ventures. They really ought to call it ‘London Restaurant Self-Promotion Fortnight’, but admittedly that doesn’t have quite the same ring to it. Tania Ballantine
