Real Bread Festival

The mysteries of rising loaves and the smell of freshly baked bread are captivating. If you want to explore the wonders of sourdoughs and other floury wonders, visit the Real Bread Festival at the Southbank Centre this weekend (October 5-7). Celebrity baker spotting opportunities include Richard Bertinet, owner of the Bertinet cookery school and general authority on bread-making, and Edd Kimber, winner of the first Great British Bake Off competition. Both bakers will be making appearances in the Real Bread Making Theatre. You’ll have to pay for any hands-on demonstrations, but some talks, including ones on the Real Bread Campaign and by the E5 Bakehouse, are free. The winner of the London’s Best Loaf competition will be announced, and exhibitor stalls should satisfy any desire to exchange your proverbial dough for actual dough. Annie Lund
