This morning was the press preview of the V&A’s much-hyped Hollywood Costume show – and worthy of the hype it is too, heaving with iconic wardrobe items from Chaplin’s suit and Dorothy’s slippers to Indy’s hat. Outfits range throughout the cinematic spectrum: ‘Vertigo’ to ‘Taxi Driver’, ‘Basic Instinct’ to ‘Kill Bill’, ‘Gone with the Wind’ to ‘Twilight’. It’s all put together with video interviews with directors and stars, and some costumes are arranged in tableaux so you can see John McClane face off against Rocky Balboa or Kate Hepburn share a drink with Audrey. The whole thing has an unmistakable frisson – part Madame Tussauds, part Catholic reliquary. Ben Walters
Hollywood Costume runs at the V&A from Saturday 20th October, until January 27 2013. For more info, see Hollywood Costume listing.
