For most, the words ‘Women’s Institute’ conjure images of middle aged women, jam, and if you’re feeling a little saucy, ‘Calendar Girls’, but that’s far from the reality in east London. As always, Dalston is doing things a little differently and the first official Women’s Institute in the area is no exception. Dalston Darlings is an organisation for women to honour WI tradition while celebrating the vibrancy and diversity of Dalston. The group meet on the first Wednesday of every month with speakers covering all sorts of topics from baking to sex, dancing to taxidermy and everything else in between. As well as creating some community spirit for the women of Dalston, they also organise fundraising events. This Saturday (Nov 3), they’ll be hosting the WI Wardrobe where they will be selling their threads at Birthdays on Stoke Newington Road to raise money for the WI and Nia: Ending Violence Against Women. Doors open at 12pm so head on down early to grab a bargain and some homemade cake… Carly-Ann Clements
