Last week anyone passing down Oxford Street who glanced up at John Lewis might have seen 14 guys abseiling up and down the beautiful old building covering the 78 x 16 meter front in 13,000 meters of fairy lights ready to be turned on today (along with the rest of the Oxford Street lights which will be illuminated by Robbie Williams at 5pm!). Lucky passersby on Thursday may also have seen me dangling off the top like an awkward spider.
When asked if I wanted to abseil down the front of the iconic department store, I was totally nonchalant. ‘Yeah sure, no problem. Easy.’ I deludedly said to myself. I figured I would pretty much glide down the building with slick Mission Impossible mad skills.
However, getting on to the roof actually felt more like I was about to do this…
I was still vaguely calm getting all kitted out
Things started to get a bit more hairy when I climbed over the railing…
Looking down certainly didn’t help
And it took a lot of cajoling to get me to even let go of the balcony
And no matter of fooling around could make me feel any more relaxed
I am definitely not as chipper here as I look
And then I was offfffffffffff
Soon I was jumping down the building like a badass ninja…
Terror to triumph.
All in a day’s work for the blogmistress. If I had known how tough it was going to be, I would have definitely got sponsorship to raise a pile of cash for charity.
I now completely appreciate the hard work of those folks putting up the xmas lights. Good job!
