Yoko Ono has been revealed as the director of the 2013 Meltdown Festival. No acts have yet been confirmed, but with previous one-of-a-kind happenings at the festival including Jeff Buckley’s final UK show, the New York Dolls reuniting and a rare performance by Elizabeth Fraser of the Cocteau Twins, the pressure is on for another sensational line-up. The artist, who will be 80 years old when she takes the helm at the Southbank Centre’s cultural spectacular in June, has performed at Meltdown twice before, for Patti Smith in 2005 and Ornette Colman in 2009. Showing her respects, Ono announced that she was ‘deeply honoured’ to be in charge of the 10 day event and was starting to approach names, ‘some of whom you will know and some who might be new to your world.’ Previous directors include Morrissey, David Bowie, Elvis Costello and John Peel, with 2012’s event by Antony Hegarty of Antony and the Johnsons.
