Following the disastrous turnout for the Police and Crime Commissioner elections, you’d think the House of Commons and House of Lords would have implemented a campaign to raise awareness of the role of Parliament a little sooner. Better late than never, though. Parliament Week (Nov 19-25) aims to encourage people of all ages to engage with the UK’s democratic system and its institutions with a range of events across the nation, including a talk exploring Charles Dickens’ time as a parliamentary reporter (hosted by Lucinda Hawksley, Dickens’ great great great granddaughter), a chance to get behind the scenes of the Bishopsgate Institute, an exhibition of rare historical photos of the Houses of Parliament and a free tour of the iconic building with the opportunity to sleepover on Saturday night. Just don’t expect your midnight snack to go on expenses. Jonno Hopkins
Parliament Week runs until November 25. For info, see parliamentweek.org/events.
