A new gin distillery has just opened in the City of London, the first since the time of Hogarth and his infamous illustration, ‘Gin Lane’ (1751). Gin drinking was at its peak in the eighteenth century, as a result of it being cheap and available (there were around 1,700 distilleries in London at that time). Gin is firmly back on the London drinking scene, with other distilleries popping up in Hammersmith (Sipsmith) and Peckham (Little Bird). This time it’s more of an ingredient for a fine Martini than a recipe for mother’s ruin.
