Commuters can breathe a sigh of relief at the news that travel has got a little bit safer. According to figures released yesterday, transport-related crime fell by 2.3% during the summer, even with record numbers of passengers using public transport during the Olympic Games and Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The Met recorded 8,319 public transport offences between July 1 and September 30, compared with 8,516 the previous year. Despite the falling crime figures, the RMT claimed that there was still a problem with crime on the Underground, noting that the planned closure of ticket offices will make matters worse.
