What is a ‘craft beer bar’? Somewhere that specialises in selling beers from small, new-wave artisan breweries. Not all craft beers are real ales, that is, cask-conditioned; and not all beers from big breweries are bad – for example, Fuller’s (based in Chiswick) make very good traditional ales, such as widely-available London Pride. Some craft breweries are bigger than you think – Meantime of Greenwich, for example, have expanded hugely in recent years. So perhaps the defining characteristic of a craft brew is that it surprises you. In which case, it’s easier than ever before to be surprised in London. Guy Dimond
