From mother’s ruin to cocktail essential, gin has always been a key ingredient in London’s drinking scene. And it’s currently super-fashionable thanks to the success of London-based Sipsmith and other boutique gin makers. You can even enrol in ‘gin school’ at Charlotte’s Bistro in Chiswick, where, every Monday at 6.30pm, a different gin producer arrives to talk about their tipple. On 7 January, it’s Sloane’s Gin from the Netherlands, followed by Caorrun Gin from Scotland (14 January), and Notting Hill’s very own Portobello Road (21 January). The event is free, and tastings and a cocktail are included. No need to book in advance – just turn up. Cath Philips
