While we were hungover on New Year’s Day, we burnt a copy of the BBC Sound of 2013 longlist as a sacrificial offering to Janus, the prophetic, two-faced Roman god of thresholds. We could have got him to predict the lottery numbers or the stock markets, but we weren’t really thinking straight, so instead we just asked which rising musicians would hit the big time in the year to come. He gave us eight names, and now we’re sharing them with you.
As with our list of the best albums of 2012, which showed just how thrillingly fragmented today’s best music has become, there are no trends and no scenes: just eight visionary artists or bands, from Joey Bada$$’s old-school hip hop to Serafina Steer’s prog-folk harp work, doing their own thing and making incredible sounds along the way. All of these artists deserve to be huge, so listen up now – and when Janus’ prophecy is fulfilled, you can say you heard it here first. James Manning
