INFRA gives remote controls a new lease of life

Posted at 2:00 pm, January 18, 2013 in Arts & Entertainment

Telly buttons, channel changers, whatever you call them, remote controls can be confusing with some front rooms having up to eight or nine devices in use at any one time. Or in other households they hold no further importance than being somewhere to store emergency batteries for urgent bike light needs.

Interactive artist Chris Shen has repurposed 625 discarded remote controls into an infrared sculpture that can be seen at Protein at 18 Hewett Street until Feb 3. Working with the little lights that the remote controls emit that cannot usually be seen unless you are wearing infrared goggles, Shen creates a display of images that fills the room with infrared light. Enlightening stuff indeed.
