Despite what the tabloids might tell you, it isn’t all young bucks like Jack Whitehall cracking gags. Old timers like Billy Connolly (70) and Jackie Mason (81) are still going strong, but even at that age it isn’t too late to give stand-up a try. At the Pleasance Theatre in Islington this Sunday comics aged 55 and over take to the stage in the straightforwardly titled ‘Old Folks Telling Jokes’. Each comic on the bill is an entrant of Silver Stand Up competition, set up by Dave’s Leicester Comedy Festival, and will be hoping to take home the 2013 gong. The gig has Alexei Sayle’s endorsement, who said, “Anything that provides an antidote to all the young upstarts taking over the comedy scene has to be good thing”. Plus it has a nice early start of 6pm (presumably because the older joke-tellers have to be in bed by nine…)
Old Folks Telling Jokes is on at 6pm Sunday January 27 at Islington’s Pleasance Theatre. See Old Folks Telling Jokes listing for details.
