Baking’s a bit of a stealth missile, isn’t it? Quietly and covertly, it has gone from being the preserve of the WI to the nation’s best-loved pastime. OK, so we’re not all actually doing the mix-making, putting-in-the-oven bit, but we certainly can’t get enough of the Great British Bake-Off. So if you’re keen to jump on the flour-dusted bandwagon, Fortnum & Mason’s new first floor pop-up bakery should be just the ticket. For 10 weeks, there’ll be a series of ‘guest bakers’ (a fortnight at a time), each creating a number of signature treats (for visitors to take away) and hosting masterclasses. There’s even a dedicated café, if you fancy a cuppa with your slice.
The line-up of bakers is…
28 January – 10 February: chef and restaurateur, Mark Hix
11 – 24 February: Edd Kimber, the first winner of the Great British Bake-Off and author of ‘The Boy Who Bakes’ and ‘Say It With Cake’
25 February – 10 March: Stacie Stewart, MasterChef finalist and ‘Sweet Baking’ judge on ITV’s forthcoming cookery show ‘Food Glorious Food’
11–24 March: The Pocket Bakery (run by food writer Rose Prince and her son Jack)
25 March – 7 April: champion of British baking and breads Paul Hollywood
There’ll also be events with Lorraine Pascale (30 Jan) and Mary Berry (26 Feb).
