It’s not that often that music journalists get invited into recording studios: usually musicians like to wait until their work has been tracked, mixed, mastered, designed, manufactured, shipped and (preferably) heavily plugged before they let anyone pass judgement on it. But our Music & Clubs editor Jonny Ensall – who’s passed some pretty harsh judgements himself – was invited last week by the mobile phone company HTC to have a poke around the Press Play studios in Bermondsey. He spoke to the studio’s owner, Andy Ramsay of Stereolab, learned a lot about the graft and geekery involved in making music, and even got to record a clap track for a half-decent R&B track. Read about his day, and find out why he still won’t think differently about writing reviews.
