Happy Pancake Day! Our guide to being a great tosser
It’s here! The one day of the year you’re encouraged, nay, obligated to make a mess in your kitchen and eat pancakes all day long. Shrove Tuesday marks the last day before lent – a 40 day period of abstinence - meaning that in those olden days, it was necessary to rid the cupboards of all sugar, fats and eggs to avoid waste and temptation. Thus pancake day was born. There are many ways to enjoy pancakes so we’ve put together a few ideas to make this year a little different. Carly-Ann Clements
Show how good a tosser you are at one of London’s Pancake Races:
This year you can choose from: Great Spitalfields Pancake Race, Greenwich and Bexley Community Hospice Pancake Race, Better Bankside Pancake Race and the Flippin’ Good Fun Pancake Race. You don’t want to make a fool of yourself, so get some practise in before you head to the field. Remember to:
Always be humble, otherwise you’re just setting yourself up for failure:
And make sure your pan’s in good nick:
And remember, aim is everything:
But if you do end up with pancake on your face, it’s not that bad:
Apparently it’s a thing:
Even Ryan Gosling has a pancake face:
But keep all animals clear of the vicinity:
And if you need some tips in tossing, Titli Nihaan is here to help:
Don’t be a tosser, eat out instead:
Don’t fancy running the race? Then the next pancake excursion is one of London’s many restaurants that serve pancakes. From Breakfast Club to Chez Lindsay, we’ll definitely be able to point you in the right direction. See our list of restaurants serving pancakes here.
Hit the kitchen:
Let’s face it, no matter what monstrosity you’ve made, it always tastes better at home. So flex that wrist and whisk up a storm in your kitchen.
For a nice basic pancake, this video tutorial will do just the trick:
But for something a little more adventurous, Pinterest has some wonderful recipes like:
These Ham and Egg Crepe Squares:
Or an omelette crepe:
Forgot that you’re entertaining tonight? Why not opt for a crepe lasagne:
And for dessert? How about a layered mocha crepe cake:
Whatever you cook, just remember to have fun:
But you should probably keep your clothes on:
And keep them away from the cats!:
Happy Pancake Day everyone!
