You might not think of your local building site as a thing of beauty, but through the eyes of photographer Andy Spain it could be. Spain has documented construction sites in London over the last few years and now the pictures are being displayed in an exhibition, LoveLDN, at the Kohn Pedersen Fox Gallery in Covent Garden (until Feb 22). At the huge construction sites at Holborn Viaduct and the new Rolls Building at the Strand’s High Court the empty spaces that are yet to be filled take on a ghostly air; whilst the site of the former Middlesex Hospital, which is undergoing a £750 million redevelopment, looks almost apocalyptic. Westminster council has just granted planning permission for the space to be turned into 237 private apartments and 54 affordable homes. You’ll never look at a muddy patch of bricks and bulldozers in the same way again.
