‘Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs’ was one of our favourite animated films of recent years. It told the story of young Flint Lockwood, whose backyard scientific experiments led him to create a machine which could turn water into food – all well and good, until the machine went berserk and started creating ice-cream snowstorms and spaghetti tornadoes. But what made the film special wasn’t the story or the animation – though both were terrific – but its goofy, low-key charm and off-beam sense of humour. With few of the original creative team returning, there’s a chance that ‘Cloudy 2’ (originally titled ‘Revenge of the Leftovers’) could have become a cheap cash-in, trading on the original film’s good name. It’s tricky to judge from this first trailer, but our expectations have definitely been raised. The plot – unashamedly inspired by ‘Jurassic Park’ – sees Flint and the gang return to their island home to find it overrun with genetically mutated food monsters: tacodiles, apple pie-thons and shrimpanzees (hang on, isn’t a shrimp already an animal?). There’s a handful of great gags here – the best involves a leek, we won’t spoil it – and the food landscapes are definitely spectacular.
The film’s due out on Oct 25, and keep an eye on timeout.com/film for news and reviews as they come in.
