Time Out goes behind the scenes at the biggest shows in town

Phantom of the Opera

There are a few perks to being the biggest, longest-running magazine in London. One of them is that we occasionally get sent free cake. Another is that just about everyone in the city is happy to have us over for a nice cup of tea and an interview.

So when we asked if we could take a tour of Her Majesty’s Theatre, they sent none other than the Phantom himself to show us around. When we dropped by ‘Matilda the Musical’, we met the brilliant David Leonard and did our best not to mess ourselves as – before our very eyes – he transformed into the show’s terrifying leading lady, Agatha Trunchbull. Always wondered how the horse in ‘War Horse’ works? We’re on first name terms with the guys who control the iconic puppet’s head, heart and, uh, ‘hind’.

And that’s not all. Over the past three weeks, we’ve been poking our mucky lens around the off-limits areas of 17 of the city’s biggest West End venues, meeting the actors, choreographers and company managers responsible for bringing the razzle-dazzle to Theatreland.

Join us behind the scenes at London’s biggest shows now.
