Hark back to a time when London was kinky at Dover Street Market

Posted at 2:30 pm, March 28, 2013 in Shopping & Style

Kinky Gerlinky, the infamous ‘80s club night fronted by Michael and Gerlinde Costiff, was a sweaty, sequin-encrusted affair – the dance floor a sea of drag queens and designers, punks and performance artists, body glitter, false eyelashes and gurning celebs. A new book celebrating the club – published by London designer Kim Jones (Style Director of Louis Vuitton menswear) and written by i-D Magazine’s James Anderson – trawls through the personal scrapbooks of Michael and his late wife Gerlinde (from their hipster café in the Chelsea Antique Market in the ‘70s, to their boutique World on Litchfield Street, and their trips to create shop and club interiors around the world), and has just dropped at Dover Street Market. ‘Michael and Gerlinde’s World: Pages from a Diary’, £40, is packed with unpublished photos of Vivienne Westwood, Divine, Sid Vicious, Derek Jarman, Boy George, Leigh Bowery and Trojan – and more than its fair share of sequins. Come down to book signing tonight from 5-7pm at Dover Street Market.
