The residents of Hackney’s Netil Market are banding together after the east London creative hub was hit by fire on March 16. The main casualty was the much-loved Cycle Pit Shop, which burnt to the ground, destroying all bikes and tools inside – a devastating blow for the two men whose income solely depended on the shop’s trade. Terrone, the market’s coffee stall was also badly hit. These guys aren’t admitting defeat though; far from it. Armed with the trusty hashtag #downbutnotout, the market’s residents are coming together this Saturday March 30 for a day of fundraising. Alongside the market’s usual treats and surprises, there will be some extra-special entertainment, all store holders will be donating profits to the cause, and to top it off stallholders Arrow Jewelry and Kana are even salvaging pieces of burnt bike and turning them into fabulous pieces of recycled jewellery. A great excuse to get down and spend some pennies if we ever heard one.
