Getting into bed with Queen Anne, Mary Of Modena or George III was a privilege reserved for, well, them alone during the highly exquisite Stuart Court. And some things never change – you still can’t get INTO the beds saturated with tales of royal fornication, consummation and groggy deaths, but you can at least see them in their natural state, courtesy of Independent charity Historic Royal Palaces. As part of a new exhibition, Hampton Court’s Baroque Palace State Apartments play host to six early state royal beds in environments close to their original settings, a sight only before seen by a handful of privileged servants entrusted with dressing the royals for their daily play. Joining privileged servants in the bed chambers were also the movers and shakers of the time, who used such private areas as a playground for ego-jostling and decision-making during working hours. What happened after dark, however, is more opaque. Adam Bloodworth
