Freak pavement explosion in Pimlico

Exploding pavement in Pimlico

There are plenty of things in this city that Londoners know to avoid: dark, deserted alleyways, Leicester Square on a Saturday night, unlicensed cabs, most of the Indian restaurants on Brick Lane… we could go on all day. But there is one thing that is practically unavoidable – pavements. Unless you want to risk your life car-dodging in the road, they are pretty much the go-to spot for walking. So we were concerned to hear that yesterday a pavement in Pimlico exploded out of nowhere, sending up a huge fire ball into the sky and narrowly missing a poor pedestrian. The blast is thought to have been caused by a faulty power cable and left a huge crater in the busy street. The Health and Safety Executive are apparently carrying out urgent inquiries into the incident. Phew! But before you relax and keep strolling, the Evening Standard reported last year that freak pavement explosions have already killed seven people in London. Careful out there, people! Sonya Barber
