Brixton pretty much has everything you could possibly need. And things that you didn’t even think you wanted – like a massive windmill. And now this unlikely historic icon is forming the centre of a community art project bringing locals together.
The 1816 Windmill is the last remaining one of its kind in London and art student Camila Cardensona who heads the ‘Hands on’ Windmill Mural project wants to turn the gardens around the mill into heartfelt celebration of all things Brixton. With help from Friends of Windmill Gardens and the Heritage Lottery Fund, Camilla is encouraging Brixtonites to come down and create a mural dedicated to the area.
If you’re itching to get your paint on, head down this week to add your memories and hopes for Brixton as Bank Holiday Monday sees the grand opening of the mural to the public. There’ll be live music, free guided tours of the Brixton Mill and lots of activities to keep the kids entertained.
