We like a good Jackanory. Did you know, for example, that the origin of the expression ‘cottaging’ – finding a male homosexual partner for anonymous and illicit sex – comes from the Cockney rhyming slang ‘cottage’, which refers to a public toilet? Well, it’s good to see so many of these fine Victorian erections are being refurbished and put to good use in the 21st Century. Only a few weeks ago The Attendant opened in a former public lav – and now the site of a former Victorian toilet block in Bermondsey, at the dodgier end of Tower Bridge, has been given a makeover by a young chef patron, Tom Sellers, who has turned it into a temple of gastronomy, for both food-lovers and the bankers from the City.
