Meow, it’s time for a cat café update

Okay, London. Put down that cup of coffee and make sure no one’s around to hear you squeal because we have some news that is worthy of a full on, cute-overload meltdown. Back in January, we told you about a fundraising campaign that the likes of London had never seen before. Like many of us, Lauren Pears had seen the concept café that brought animal lovers one step closer to becoming animal owners and wanted a piece of the action. Lady Dinah’s Cat Emporium is set to be London’s first cat café and though it’s not opening in May as previously predicted, plans are well on their way to completion. Pears has found a property that seems appropriate but is wisely keeping her mouth shut until everything is signed, sealed and delivered to avoid disappointing funders and eager, future patrons alike.

But we do know a few things. First of all, the cat café is in the borough of Tower Hamlets. Secondly, opening a cat café is hard! Finding the property was just the first hurdle and now Pears is facing rising costs, permits and training that takes time and doesn’t provide any income. Thirdly, people desperately want to work at a cat café. Without advertising, Pears has received close to 1,000 applicants for a handful of positions. However, due to legislation, all employees will have to be trained and certified which could take months, further delaying the café’s opening. For all you animal lovers that work full time but still want to work with the pussies, there’s hope for you yet. Pears is hoping to run volunteering programmes to help people gain experience working with animals and is even thinking about opening the cat first aid training to the public.

It’s obviously been a hard slog but London’s premier cat lady is staying optimistic. There’s some beautiful merchandising in the making and some cat-themed events that have our ears pricked. We’ll have more info for you shortly but for now, help Lauren gain a little extra funding toward her cat café, vote for her to win the motors.co.uk Most Deserving Business AwardCarly-Ann Clements
