‘To market, to market, to buy a fat pig’, as the centuries-old nursery rhyme goes. Not that you’re likely to find a fat pig (of the four-trottered variety, anyway) in Cheapside these days, or much that’s cheap (‘cheap’ was a word for ‘market’ in medieval English). But there is now a connection between Cheapside’s historic market roots and the modern-day shopping mall that dominates it, One New Change. The mall (home to the likes of Reiss, H&M and Topshop) has just launched a Saturday food market, though the produce would hardly be recognised by medieval shoppers (‘Why go the whole hog, darling, when you can get great charcuterie?’). Instead the food is distinctly 21st century, ranging from Argentinian empanadas to Chinese dumplings and Japanese spiced nuts. Perfect for a posh pig-out.
One New Change, Cheapside, EC2M 9AF. St Paul’s tube. Saturdays 10am-4pm.
