Let's Start A Pussy Riot

Last year, three members of the Russian feminist punk-rock group Pussy Riot were arrested and imprisoned after performing a ‘punk prayer’ in the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow. The case drew worldwide attention. Amnesty International classed them as ‘prisoners of conscience’, Pussy Riot’s day-glo balaclavas were seen on the streets of London at a protest against their imprisonment and politicians, artists and musicians worldwide condemned their treatment by the Russian authorities.

Now a new book, ‘Let’s Start a Pussy Riot’ – curated by Emely Neu, edited by Jade French and published by Rough Trade Records – has collected some of those artists’ responses. All profits from the book will go directly to Pussy Riot, and contributing musicians include London acts Gaggle, Bo Ningen and No Bra, as well as The Knife, Billy Childish, CSS, Jeffrey Lewis and members of Sonic Youth. ‘Let’s Start a Pussy Riot’ was launched at Yoko Ono’s Meltdown Festival over the weekend, and is available from Foyles Royal Festival Hall now or from the Rough Trade website from June 24, but you can take a look at some of the book’s most striking images on our gallery page right here, right now.
