After a nine year break, the real-life Wacky Racers return as the Red Bull Soapbox Race drives back into London on July 14. 70 human-powered soapboxes will battle each other against the clock down the treacherous slopes of Alexandra Palace. While Dick Dastardly, Muttley and the Mean Machine may be absent, Elvis’ blue suede shoe, a loaf of bread baked to a soapbox size and a Royal baby carriage are to be some of the outrageous hand-crafted vehicles taking part this year.
Aside from the lunacy on track, there will be an assortment of entertainment to fuel the crowd including live music, ‘people pit-stops’ and face painting. Judges, who include Chief Designer at Red Bull Racing Rob Marshall, will be looking for speed, creativity and showmanship, and judging by previous events they will have their work cut out for them.
