Back on July 4 1776, us Brits waved goodbye to the United States as they declared their independence from our rule and adopted their most famous federal holiday – Independence Day. Whilst speeches, baseball games and family reunions are mainstays of the celebrations, everybody knows July 4 is about barbecues and beer. So in true red, white and blue style, we’ve scoured London for three of the most gluttonous, extravagant and artery clogging meat-eating competitions the city has on offer.
1) Big Easy: Rib Eating Competition
Big Easy: the place where rib eating champions are born. The table is set, reinforced chairs placed, and 70 racks of ribs ready to be devoured. Big Easy, London’s infamous BBQ crabshack will be challenging ten optimistic meat mavericks to defeat seven racks each in just 30 minutes. The competition will start at 6pm with the winner receiving a £100 Big Easy voucher and the prestigious honour of seeing their name engraved on the wall of fame. For those who aren’t lining themselves up for an evening of indigestion, and would rather drink yourself silly, the cocktails will be flowing with specially created drinks such as the ‘July 4th Shooter’. Careful with those bad boys. There will also be live music from 8pm, so get fasting now and wear something with an expandable waist. For more information about what’s on offer and to book your place in the competition (don’t delay) offer visit the bigeasy.co.uk.
2) The Blues Kitchen Camden: Hot Dog Eating Competition
The American diner in Camden are celebrating Independence Day in line with the old 4th of July legend. In 1916 four people loosened their belts at Nathan’s restaurant in New York and used hot-dog guzzling as way to distinguish who was the most patriotic. In the case of The Blues Kitchen, whoever comes out victorious after 30 minutes of consuming as many hot dogs possible won’t be labelled a patriot, just a freak of nature. The current record stands at 19, with the chomping champ earning a free meal for two, a Blues Kitchen t-shirt and the gleeful satisfaction of being lauded by every person in the room. Once the dog-eat-dog competition has rounded off, Orleans Style Marching Band – The Brass Volcanoes – will be getting you in the red, white and blue mood to get patriotically plastered. 3) Proud Camden: Get Lucky Independence Day Party
Beer pong, a hot dog eating competition and a Playboy Stable. Is there anything more you need from Proud Camden? No, probably not, but they are giving it to you anyway. Their Thursday club night, ‘Get Lucky’ will be imploding with bunting, flags and billboards to turn the venue into a Yankee fun fair. If you’ve got a big appetite, your night may just be a very cheap one; the winner of the marathon hot-dog eating competition earns themselves a whopping £50 bar tab. Joe Driscoll will kick off the night with his soulful mix of acoustic tunes, and live DJs will fly the American flag high right through till midnight. To find out more, see proudcamden.com.
