It’s an unknown quantity in a blockbuster season stuffed with sequels, adaptations and remakes, but new action movie ‘Pacific Rim’ has a pretty strong pedigree: it’s directed by ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’ and ‘Hellboy’ helmer Guillermo del Toro, it’s inspired by classic Japanese monster movies and it stars Hackney’s own golden boy, ‘Luther’ himself, Idris Elba. The story’s simple: giant monsters from another dimension have busted through a portal in the depths of the Pacific Ocean to destroy civilisation. The only way for humanity to fight back is by creating skyscraper-sized, psychically controlled robot defenders. So far, so good, but is there any more to the movie than special effects? Can this most creative of directors put his own unique stamp on this Boy’s Own material?
