New Sichuanese diner changes name to Baiwei

BaiWei, Chinatown

‘One dish, one style; a hundred dishes, a hundred tastes.’ Baiwei (which means ‘a hundred flavours’ in Chinese) exemplifies this Sichuanese culinary adage. The owner of this excellent Chinatown diner should probably should have stuck with ‘one restaurant, one name’, as the unsavoury moniker the venue opened with  – ‘Big Leap Forward’ – was replaced in just a fortnight. While we appreciate the lengthy selection of authentic, home-style Sichuan Hunan and northern dishes (thanks to menu consultancy from Sichuanese food expert Fuchsia Dunlop), the propaganda paintings in reference to The Great Leap Forward remain.
