Ahead of the London MexFest at the Rich Mix on July 11-14, the festival’s producer Gabriel Stavenhagan told us his favourite ‘Mexico in London’ secret spots.
‘This super intimate bar and restaurant in Dalston is full of surprises. The staff are friendly, know their stuff and the food is as authentic as it comes, but the drinks and sharers are the real reason to go. Expect it to be packed full of Mexicans, agave worms, the odd mariachi, customers (and me) included.’
‘Sunday Brunch isn’t a Mexican tradition, but it’s certain one I’ll be taking home. For £20 Mestizo provides an all-you-can-eat feast fit for a Luchador. If Saturday night hasn’t taken its toll and you can’t wait ’til next weekend there’s a huge selection of drinks behind the bar over 250 tequilas, mezcals and sotols to tempt you. Don’t miss the handmade corn tortilla quesadillas. Absolute must.’
‘A strange Chelsea-meets-Mexico concoction, the novelty value plays high with this bar, but you’ll struggle to find a venue which comes closer to matching the Mexican party spirit. I come here for the cocktails, and completely crazy face painting. Make sure to try the Mayan pyramid for guaranteed Fiesta Mexico style.’
‘The Mexican groceries stocked here are a welcome reminder of home when London’s at its wettest! This little shop that sells all things Mexican, has art, clothing, food drink and other must-haves, perfect if you’re looking to bring Mexico into your house! Run by true Mexico lovers for Mexico lovers.’
‘The newly opened little sister of the brilliant La Bodega Negra, has a bit of a wild side. Authentic, delicious Mexican dishes from their very passionate chef is a given, but this East London-based venue loves a party. Head there in the evening, grab a space on the communal table near the kitchen and stay there till they kick you out (at 2am). Good times guaranteed.’
