Ladies pleat your prom dresses, gents grab your side saddle shoes; with a backdrop of the Kensington Palace, refreshments in the orangery and a marquee on the lawn, tonight’s Kensington Palace Summer Ball is set to ooze 1950’s finesse. Party-goers should prepare to rock’n’roll as the evening will be set to live music from period pin-up girls The Tootsie Rollers, jump and jivers The Inteli-Gents and electro-swing songstress Little Violet.
A series of top-notch DJs will be breaking out the records, including an old school mix of shellac sounds by Ms Chameleon’s mechanical melodies and sets by Kate Hutchinson and Gabby Young and Other Animals. Fifties chicks with winning outfits will be awarded floral corsages from The Flower Appreciation Society, palace experts will be telling tales of past-time parties, and there will be performances by hula-hoop troupe Marawa the Amazing’s Majorettes – guests will even be invited to hoop themselves happy too!
While left-footed dancers can be pointed in the direction of Alice Gabb for the guidance of an old fashioned dance card, MIEN Magazine will be sharing etiquette tips to keep up the elegant air. So, whether you go as a demure débutante, or a sexy silver screen icon, there will be no excuse for anything less than the height of fifties flair.
If this all isn’t enough, tonight’s party ties in with the Palace’s latest exhibition of royal fashion, Fashion Rules, and includes the opportunity to visit the show and create vintage designs alongside professional fashion illustrators. Better dolly up for the ginchiest gig in town! Kitty Knowles
