The Notting Hill Carnival is five weeks away, which seems like ages unless you are preparing your food stall, practicing in a band, perfecting your dance moves or covered in feathers and sequins making costumes for the thousands of dancers all shaking it along the Carnival route.

Carnival veterans The London School of Samba are right on track this year and are shortly nominating their 2013-2014 Queen of the Bateria. Their Queen holds one of the most important positions in the Samba and will dance ahead of the band at Carnival and other events in their all-year-round-busy calendar.

If you want to witness this Carnival tradition, the London School of Samba will be at Floripa on Wed July 24 from 9pm as their performers dance head to head along with their Bateria to compete for the crown. After the competition DJ Cliffy of Batmacumba will continue the Brazilian vibe into the early hours of the morning.

The perfect antidote if you are finding all the current royal news distinctly lacking in glitter and feathers. Jude Brosnan
