After a rather long and drawn-out cat fight, we are pleased to hear that car manufacturer Jaguar has called off its legal battle with Shoreditch bar and gallery Dream Bags Jaguar Shoes over the its name. In May last year, we flagged up the online petition doing the rounds asking for signatures from people who ‘never experienced any confusion between the restaurant bar and gallery brand Jaguar Shoes and Jaguar who make cars’. Although the petition was signed by over 1,000 people, it has taken until this week for Jaguar to announce that it had withdrawn its opposition to the bar trademarking their name (after it was plagiarised).
For the last two years, lawyers from both sides have been attempting to negotiate a deal and bar co-founder Mr Letchford said it was an enormous relief to have laid the matter to rest: ‘It cost us legal fees, but at the same time we are massively relieved to just move on and feel like we can continue to build equity into the brand. At the end of the day we are doing nice positive community- and arts-based things, we like doing it under the mantle of Jaguar Shoes and it’s lovely knowing we can continue to do that and not worry that we have to embark on a rebranding exercise.’ Jaguar Cars confirmed that the matter has now been resolved, but couldn’t comment any further due to a confidentiality clause.
