If we never stopped from the narrow avenues of our busy lives to take a second and explore what was around us, we would not only miss everything, but we would never make any connection with our local community, history or culture. We would never gain an insight into the humble living of Brick Lane Market seller Tom the Sailor and his dog Matty, or the early morning East End journeyman Kevin The Milk Man. These are are but two of the 10,000 stories that brilliant blogger The Gentle Author of Spitafields Life has vividly disclosed to us in his attempt to portray the depth and richness of life in the East End, one day at a time.

More than 100 pictures of Spitalfields’ characters will be exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery for one day on July 25 only when The Gentle Author will be giving an illustrated lecture of the many beautiful hand-picked East End tales he has penned, as well as holding a book signing after the talk.
