At last Whovians. The wait is over… almost. Today, the BBC announced that Matt Smith’s successor as The Doctor will be announced live on air on Sunday evening at 7pm and, as you can imagine, the internet went wild. With no set precedent on how the world’s most loved Time Lord is cast, the intrigue has been almost too much to handle. Speculation has been running wild all over Twitter and everyone from Miranda Hart to Benedict Cumberbatch and, to be frank, we just don’t know what to think. Will they opt for a female Doctor at long last? Will it be lucky number 12 with a Doctor that’s a different race? All we know is that whoever it is will be taking the role after this year’s Christmas special.
And though it’s only hours away, we still can’t help guessing who it might be. So to help us on our futile mental quest, we’ve had a look at the William Hill list of favourites and here are the top four:
1. Pete Capaldi: 11/8
Why? Because Steven Moffat alluded to the idea that the Doctor may be older this time. That’s it as far as we can tell.
2. Ben Daniels: 4/1
Why? See above.
3. Rory Kinnear: 6/1
Why? Credentials and wild speculation we believe.
4. Ben Whishaw: 10/1
Why? Whish-ful thinking. That and he has a penchant for intelligent, quirky roles.
So there we have it. We’re guessing that it’ll be none of the above and it’ll be a relatively unknown actor like all the previous Doctors and companions but who knows? Only time will tell. Carly-Ann Clements
