We popped into Selfridges yesterday to check out the brand new toy department with two littl’uns in tow (check out the full review in next week’s magazine). We can confirm: nippers will love it. Childrenswear buyer Erin Moscow has made sure it’s an edit of the best toys including commercial hits like Furbys, My Little Pony and Lego alongside lovely old fashioned wooden toys by Vilac and a great range of exclusives including the brilliant design-them-yourself Makies dolls.
But the biggest news? Barbie has opened her very own shop within the department with a special range of looks created by some of London’s edgiest designers. Fred Butler, Nasir Mazhar and SISTER by SIBLING have all created limited edition looks for the iconic American doll. ‘I never realised how intricate it would be to recreate my collection in miniature for Barbie,’ says Mazhar, who even designed mini versions of his cult box peak cap for the doll. ‘It was good to include Ken too so he could chaperone her.’ Fred Butler has created some colourful Lady Gaga-esque outfits for the plastic icon, while the SIBLING trio Joe Bates, Sid Bryan and Cozette McCreery have swathed her in their statements knits. ‘Handcrafted by experts in our atelier, these outfits are pure couture, but only for Barbie,’ says Bates. Looking good for a 50-something, Barbie. Maggie Davis
The dolls are on sale from £120. Find out more about Selfridges.
