We’ll never forget the first time we saw the London Underground map on our mobile phone. It was life-changing. Never again would we have to risk eye-contact with fellow commuters by peering at the on-board route diagrams while taking an unusual trip across town – we could simply pinch to zoom and work it out from there.
But that was just the start of it. Mere months later, there were apps that could plot routes for us. Then they started using GPS to guide us to our nearest station, and took took the liberty of warning us whenever there were engineering works (like every damn day, right guys?). But with this latest app, we’ve surely reached the pinnacle of ultra-useful tube coolness. There’s no casual way of saying this, so we’re just going to come right out and say it.
IT LETS YOU SEE WHERE EVERY SINGLE TUBE TRAIN IS RIGHT NOW, IN REAL TIME. AND IT’S FREE.
Well, sort of. Tube Map Live (which does the above and not much else) is free. But if you also want journey planning tools, live line statuses and all that jazz, you’ll need to cough up £1.99 for Tube Tracker.
Still, even with the freebie, you can prop it up on your desk and pretend you’re the king of TfL, and who’s never dreamt about that? Just us? Ah. Righto. David Clack
