To celebrate the launch of their new film ‘Planes’, those jokers at Disney thought it would be a good idea to send me up in a tiny two seater plane, not dissimilar to the protagonist Dusty Crophopper, to try out a few of the stunts they used in the film. When asked if I fancied a trip out to the West London Aero Club, I was pretty stoked. Who wouldn’t want to try out a loop the loop?! Easy peasy. What I hadn’t bargained on was just how hot it would be in the plane, how dizzy it would make me feel and that they would be filming my grimacing, sweaty face the whole time. During my ten-minute flight, I experienced racing turns, a half cuban, wingover, vertical reversal height and speed change and a victory roll (all of which feature in the film, slightly more gracefully than the real life versions I experienced!). They were each accompanied by an equal mix of intense euphoria and fear. No, it wasn’t me actually flying the plane, but I did get a terrifying chance to steer for a few moments. And yes, I had to have a long lie down after we landed. Ignore all that chat at the end about me wanting to come back next weekend to learn to fly properly, I think I’ll leave it to the pros from now on. Sonya Barber
