Victorian Newgate Street

New technology has changed all of our lives, and it seems that dead historical figures are no exception. This new Twitter feed turns back the clock to the ‘Autumn of Terror’ of 1888, when Jack the Ripper was on the loose and the people of Whitechapel feared for their lives. Follow the conversations of the townspeople as the brutal murders happen in ‘real time’ and suspects are questioned. Places and events are described in detail on the feed by so-called ‘Ripperologists’ at The History Press, bringing the past to life with their research taken from documents and photos. We still don’t know who is responsible for the murders, but through this project the dark side of the Victorian East End can be experienced in all its gruesome digital glory.

Follow the events of the Autumn of 1888 in real time at @WChapelRealTime.
